Disable Yahoo Chat
I must apologize if you are trying to get me through Yahoo! Chat. Don't bother. I hate it. I keep getting asked by obvious spammers to be their friends. Actually I have gotten hundreds of requests from people I don't know. I was so fed up it's completely disabled. If you wish to disable Yahoo Chat as well, it's not hard but quite well hidden in their documentation. So here's the skinny on how to sign out of/disable Yahoo! chat:
1. Under “Chat & Mobile Text” on the left of the page, click the menu to the right of the words “I am”. This opens a pull-down menu. (as above)
2. Click Sign out of Chat.
Since Yahoo! Mail remembers your settings from session to session, you'll be signed out of chat until you change it. I can tell you I won't be enabling it any time soon!

Hi Adrian,
I feel precisely the same way! All of a sudden, the chat and mobile features just happened to show up; I've disabled chat, however when I hit the tab key on my Mac, I get some funky warning from Yahoo chat.
Boo. Yahoo is not very considerate when adding features like this. Option should be there to completely opt out.
I agree, yahoo should have a way to completely remove this silly little chat application from the navigation area. I have limited bandwidth and this thing seems to take a while to load, so I'm worried if it is going to push up my download quota.
I've used yahoo mail for many years but I'm starting to wonder if there are other alternative email providers that allow just simple email, with just a decent spell checker.

Thank you, Adrian! You're a lifesaver. That extra feature was a pain. It's been lagging my system everytime I wanted to check email. I can chat with other programmes like messenger, who needs yahoo chat?! sheesh..
I saw a whooping 2.5Gb ram sucked by this monster application today.. I'm itchy to find out how to remove it once and for all from my mail.
Yahoo, next time ASK before you add a FEATURE. It was screwing up my regular messenger!
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! This feature is one of the most annoying I've seen in a long while. Think kept asking me to add more contacts every time I opened mail.......and I do NOT log into my mail to chat with people. If I want to chat, I open Messenger!
A lot more thought about this feature would have saved a lot of frustration for Yahoo users.
